Thymosin α1 is a peptide fragment derived from prothymosin α, a protein encoded by the PTMA gene in humans. It was the first peptide from Thymosin Fraction 5 to be completely sequenced and synthesized. Thymosin α1 is a 28-amino acid fragment derived from a longer precursor protein that consists of 113 amino acids. This molecule is considered a significant component of Thymosin Fraction 5, known for its ability to restore immune function in animals lacking thymus glands. Research indicates that Thymosin α1 enhances cell-mediated immunity in both humans and experimental animals.
As of 2009, Thymosin α1 has been approved for use in 35 underdeveloped or developing countries for the treatment of Hepatitis B and C. Additionally, it is used to boost the immune response in the treatment of various other diseases.
Clinical studies suggest that Thymosin α1 may be beneficial in addressing conditions such as cystic fibrosis, septic shock, acute respiratory distress syndrome, peritonitis, acute cytomegalovirus infection, tuberculosis, severe acute respiratory syndrome, and lung infections in critically ill patients. It is also being investigated for its potential use in treating chronic hepatitis B and cancer.
